They count lunch at full price as though eating at home were free, and they leave out the cost of heating and cooling a house you would otherwise have left empty. This calculator discounts the first and includes the second, using current fuel prices for your state.

How this calculator works

Why the food and clothing lines are discounted

A $14 lunch not bought is not $14 saved, because lunch still happens. Groceries typically replace a quarter to a half of it, so the typical figure counts about three quarters of the spend and the low end counts under half.

Clothing works the same way. Most remote workers still buy clothes, just less of the kind that needs dry cleaning. Counting the full wardrobe budget as saved is the single most common way these estimates get inflated.

The cost that gets left out

Occupying a house all day costs money. Heating or cooling runs during hours it would otherwise be set back, a computer and monitors draw power, and lights stay on. The default of $1.50 a day is modest; in a hot southern summer or a cold northern winter it can be double that or more.

It is not enough to reverse the conclusion for anyone with a meaningful commute, but it is enough to matter, and leaving it out overstates the saving by roughly a tenth for a typical hybrid pattern.

Time is reported, not monetised

A 50 minute round trip over 138 remote days is about 115 hours — nearly three working weeks. That is genuinely returned to you and it is shown prominently.

It is not turned into dollars. Valuing commuting time at your hourly rate assumes you would otherwise have sold that hour, which for most salaried employees is not true. What that time is worth is a judgement for you rather than an output of a calculator.

Where the numbers come from

Location is optional, and we only ask for a ZIP code or a state — never a street address. A ZIP code is matched to its state using published postal prefix ranges, and that state is used to look up labor and price rows in the tables below. If you leave it blank, or your ZIP cannot be matched, the estimate falls back to a national average and says so on the result.

Nothing you enter is transmitted or stored. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, and the only place your inputs appear is in the page URL, so you can bookmark or share a result if you choose to.

    EIA publishes weekly retail gasoline prices for the nation, for each Petroleum Administration for Defense District (PADD) sub-region, and for nine individual states. States EIA does not publish separately take their PADD sub-region price, which is the finest published geography available; every result discloses which of the two applied. Prices are a weekly snapshot and move faster than any other figure on this site, so every calculator that uses them lets you type in the price you actually paid.

    Two numbers here come straight from the EPA: the model year 2024 fleet-wide real-world average of 27.2 MPG and the truck SUV average of 25.7 MPG. The other class averages are editorial estimates positioned around those published anchors, and every one of them describes a NEW vehicle — the average vehicle actually on the road is roughly twelve years old and less efficient, which is why each class carries a range rather than a point. Depreciation, maintenance, tires, and registration are assumptions: no federal agency publishes them per vehicle, and the commercial datasets that do are licensed products we have not bought. Each is registered in the assumption registry with its observed range and rationale, and each is adjustable in every calculator that uses it.

    Compensation shares are the published BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation figures for June 2026 — employer cost per hour worked, which is what an employer spends rather than what an employee receives after tax. The Fair Labor Standards Act figures are the federal floor only. Many states set stricter rules, and no state rules are encoded here, so nothing in this dataset should be read as establishing what any particular worker is owed.

These are the figures we chose rather than measured. For each one we record the range of values found across references, what we selected, and why — because an estimate you cannot interrogate is not much better than a guess. The 0 marked high risk are the ones most likely to be wrong and most consequential when they are.

    A lunch not bought is not a lunch not eaten. Groceries replace part of it, so counting the full workplace spend as saved overstates the benefit — which is the single most common error in remote-work savings estimates. Three quarters is the typical case; the low end assumes you genuinely cook at home.

What changes the price most

Commute distance
The largest single line for most people. Fuel and wear together run roughly 25 to 35 cents a mile.
Days remote per week
Scales everything proportionally, except transit passes, which usually do not scale at all.
Parking
Nothing in most of the country and $15 to $40 a day in dense cities, where it can exceed the fuel saving.
Food bought at work
Real but overstated in most estimates. Discounted here to what eating at home does not replace.
Home energy
Works against you. A house occupied all day costs more to condition than one left empty.
Dropping a vehicle
Not modeled, and larger than everything above combined. Only available to households that genuinely no longer need the car.

How much money does working from home save?

For a typical hybrid worker — three days remote, a 24 mile round trip commute — roughly $2,000 to $3,000 a year net of extra home energy costs. A long commute in an expensive-fuel state with paid parking can push that past $6,000. Fully remote roles that let a household drop a vehicle save far more again.

What are the hidden costs of working from home?

Mainly energy: heating and cooling a house you would otherwise have left empty, plus the power your equipment draws all day. Typically $1 to $3 a day, which offsets around a tenth of the gross saving. Home office equipment and higher internet service are one-off or small by comparison.

Does working from home save on gas?

Yes, and it is usually the largest line. A 24 mile round trip three days a week is about 1,650 miles a year not driven, worth roughly $220 in fuel at the national average — and about the same again in wear and depreciation, which most people forget to count.

Should I count my commute time as money saved?

Report it, but be careful about pricing it. Valuing commuting hours at your salary rate assumes you would otherwise have been paid for them, which is not true for most salaried workers. This calculator shows the hours returned to you and leaves the valuation to you.

Is a hybrid schedule worth less than fully remote?

Proportionally less on most lines, but not all. A monthly transit pass costs the same for ten days as twenty, parking permits often work the same way, and you still need the work wardrobe. The step from four days remote to five is worth more than the arithmetic suggests, because it is what lets you drop the fixed costs entirely.
