How this calculator works

Distance is yours to supply

You type the mileage in. There is no map integration, no address lookup, and no request to any external service — which means the calculator works offline, costs nothing to run, and never sees where you are going.

The trade-off is honest: a straight mileage figure cannot know that your route climbs a mountain range, sits in city traffic for two hours, or crosses a series of toll bridges. Where those apply, nudge the fuel economy down and the toll allowance up.

Why lodging usually beats fuel

A 900 mile drive burns roughly 32 gallons in a crossover — about $130 at current prices. Two nights in a mid-range hotel is around $290. The pattern holds for almost any multi-day trip: the driving is the cheap part.

This is also why adding passengers barely changes the total. Fuel and lodging are shared costs, so a car of four costs each person roughly what a car of one costs in total, divided four ways — the reason road trips beat flying for groups long after they stop beating it for solo travellers.

Where the numbers come from

Location is optional, and we only ask for a ZIP code or a state — never a street address. A ZIP code is matched to its state using published postal prefix ranges, and that state is used to look up labor and price rows in the tables below. If you leave it blank, or your ZIP cannot be matched, the estimate falls back to a national average and says so on the result.

Nothing you enter is transmitted or stored. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, and the only place your inputs appear is in the page URL, so you can bookmark or share a result if you choose to.

States EIA does not publish separately take their PADD sub-region price, which is the finest published geography available; every result discloses which of the two applied. Prices are a weekly snapshot and move faster than any other figure on this site, so every calculator that uses them lets you type in the price you actually paid.

    Two numbers here come straight from the EPA: the model year 2024 fleet-wide real-world average of 27.2 MPG and the truck SUV average of 25.7 MPG. The other class averages are editorial estimates positioned around those published anchors, and every one of them describes a NEW vehicle — the average vehicle actually on the road is roughly twelve years old and less efficient, which is why each class carries a range rather than a point. Depreciation, maintenance, tires, and registration are assumptions: no federal agency publishes them per vehicle, and the commercial datasets that do are licensed products we have not bought. Each is registered in the assumption registry with its observed range and rationale, and each is adjustable in every calculator that uses it.

These are the figures we chose rather than measured. For each one we record the range of values found across references, what we selected, and why — because an estimate you cannot interrogate is not much better than a guess. The 1 marked high risk are the ones most likely to be wrong and most consequential when they are.

What changes the price most

Nights away
Usually the largest line on any multi-day trip, and the easiest to cut by one.
Number of travellers
Raises food roughly proportionally, but leaves fuel and lodging almost untouched — so cost per person falls steeply.
Distance
Sets fuel and wear directly, and often forces an extra overnight stop past about 600 miles.
Fuel economy
A pickup at 21 MPG costs about a third more in fuel than a crossover at 28 for the same route.
Route
Tolls, terrain, and traffic are not visible in a mileage figure. The northeast corridor and mountain crossings both cost noticeably more than the distance suggests.
How you eat
The gap between a packed cooler and three restaurant meals a day is often larger than the entire fuel bill.

How much does a road trip cost?

For two people driving 900 miles round trip with two hotel nights, expect roughly $600 to $700 once fuel, lodging, and food are counted — about $300 to $350 each. Fuel alone is usually only a fifth to a quarter of that.

How do I calculate gas for a road trip?

Divide the total distance by your vehicle’s MPG to get gallons, then multiply by the price per gallon. Highway cruising usually beats your everyday economy, so use the higher end of your vehicle’s rating unless you are towing, loaded, or crossing mountains.

Is it cheaper to drive or fly?

Driving usually wins for two or more people on trips under roughly 700 miles, because fuel is shared while airfares are not. Flying tends to win for solo travellers on longer distances, especially once you count nights lost to driving and the value of your own time.

How many miles should I drive in a day on a road trip?

Most people find 500 to 600 miles a comfortable maximum, about eight to nine hours at the wheel with stops. Beyond that, fatigue becomes the real constraint, and a night’s lodging is a better trade than pushing on.
