How the estimate is built

Material is priced per linear foot for the chosen metal, then multiplied by a profile factor — a 6-inch K-style uses about 22% more material than a 5-inch, and half-round about 45% more. Seamless adds roughly 15%, because the coil stock and the on-site forming machine cost more than stock sections.

Labour uses the Bureau of Labor Statistics mean wage for construction laborers in your state times a contractor burden factor, at a production rate that varies by material, then multiplied for roofline complexity, storeys, and site access. Corners, valleys, and level changes all mean stopping, measuring, and mitring.

Sizing, which matters more than price

A gutter overflows for one of three reasons: the profile is too small for the roof area draining into it, there are too few downspouts, or it is blocked. Only the third is a maintenance problem.

Five-inch K-style handles most single-family roofs. Six-inch is worth specifying on large, steep roofs and in regions with intense rainfall. Downspouts should be one per 30 to 40 feet — we flag it above when your figures imply fewer.

Where the numbers come from

Location is optional, and we only ask for a ZIP code or a state — never a street address. A ZIP code is matched to its state using published postal prefix ranges, and that state is used to look up labor and price rows in the tables below. If you leave it blank, or your ZIP cannot be matched, the estimate falls back to a national average and says so on the result.

Nothing you enter is transmitted or stored. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, and the only place your inputs appear is in the page URL, so you can bookmark or share a result if you choose to.

What changes the price most

Material
A tenfold spread from vinyl to copper. Aluminium is the default for good reason.
Seamless versus sectional
About 15% more, and it removes the joints that sectional systems eventually leak at.
Profile
Six-inch and half-round use materially more metal per foot than standard 5-inch K-style.
Guards
Can double the cost of the job. They reduce cleaning; none eliminate it.
Storeys and access
Height drives both labour and risk, and makes future replacement expensive too.
Fascia condition
Rotten fascia must be repaired before gutters can be hung, and its presence usually means the old system was failing.

Frequently asked

How much do new gutters cost?

Installed, seamless aluminium commonly runs $8 to $18 per linear foot, so a typical 160-foot single-storey home lands in the low four figures. Copper can be four to six times that. Guards, extra downspouts, and fascia repair all add on top.

Are seamless gutters worth it?

Usually yes. They cost around 15% more and remove every joint along the run, which is where sectional gutters leak first. The trade-off is that they must be formed on site by a contractor with the machine, so it is not a DIY option.

Are gutter guards worth the money?

It depends on your trees, not on the marketing. Under heavy leaf fall a good micro-mesh guard meaningfully reduces cleaning. On a house with no overhanging trees the payback is poor. No guard eliminates maintenance, whatever the sales pitch says.

How many downspouts do I need?

One per 30 to 40 feet of gutter as a starting point, more on large or steep roofs and in heavy-rainfall regions. Too few is the most common reason a correctly sized gutter still overflows, and adding one later is cheap compared with the water damage.

What size gutters do I need?

Five-inch K-style is adequate for most single-family roofs. Move to six-inch if the roof is large, steep, or in a region with intense downpours — a steep roof delivers water to the gutter much faster than a shallow one of the same area.
