The physics is unusually favourable to running slowly: pump power falls with the cube of speed, so halving the speed and doubling the run time uses about a quarter of the energy for the same water turnover.

How this calculator works

From horsepower to watts

One horsepower is 746 watts of shaft output, but a motor is not perfectly efficient, so a single-speed pool pump draws roughly 1,250 watts per nameplate horsepower at the wall. That gap is why nameplate ratings consistently understate what a pump costs to run.

Variable-speed pumps use permanent-magnet motors that are more efficient at any speed, and more importantly they run slowly. The affinity laws say flow is proportional to speed while power is proportional to speed cubed — so a pump at half speed moves half the water for an eighth of the power. Running twice as long at half speed achieves the same turnover for about a quarter of the energy.

Season length and turnover

Season length is estimated from your local cooling degree days: year-round in hot climates, about four months where summers are short. You can override it.

We also check whether your run time actually achieves one full turnover of your pool volume, which is the usual circulation target. Many pools run considerably longer than they need to, and that is the cheapest saving available — it costs nothing to change.

    The affinity laws give power proportional to the cube of speed, so a pump at half speed draws one eighth the power. Real installations run between 40% and 60% of full speed depending on plumbing restriction and filter condition, giving 0.06 to 0.22; we selected 0.16 for variable speed and 0.28 for two-speed low. The comparison in the calculator also lengthens variable-speed runtime to deliver equal turnover, so the saving shown is not an artefact of comparing unequal work.

    Why this value
    One horsepower is 746 W of shaft output; an induction motor at 55-70% overall efficiency draws 1,050-1,350 W at the wall, and service-factor-rated motors draw more still. Permanent-magnet motors in variable-speed pumps are more efficient, so they use the lower 1,180 figure. This is the best-understood assumption in the registry because it follows from motor physics rather than market pricing.

What changes the price most

Pump type
The dominant factor. A variable-speed pump can cut running cost by 70% or more for the same turnover.
Run time
Directly proportional. Most pools need one turnover a day, not continuous circulation.
Motor size
An oversized pump costs more every hour it runs and rarely improves water quality.
Season length
A year-round pool in Florida costs roughly three times a four-month northern season.
Electricity rate
Pool pumps run for long hours, so rate differences compound heavily.
Plumbing restriction
Not modeled. Undersized pipes and dirty filters make the pump work harder for less flow.

How much does it cost to run a pool pump?

A 1.5 HP single-speed pump running eight hours a day for a six-month season uses roughly 2,700 kilowatt-hours, about $490 at the national average rate. The same pool served by a variable-speed pump typically costs well under $200. In a year-round climate with expensive power, a single-speed pump can exceed $1,500 a year.

Is a variable-speed pool pump worth it?

Usually yes, and the payback is often two to four years. Power falls with the cube of speed, so running slowly for longer achieves the same turnover for a fraction of the energy. Federal efficiency standards now require variable speed for most new residential pumps anyway.

How many hours a day should I run my pool pump?

Enough for roughly one full turnover of the pool volume. For most residential pools with an appropriately sized pump that is six to eight hours in summer and less in cooler months. The turnover figure above tells you what your specific setup needs — many people run far longer than necessary.

Is it cheaper to run the pump at night?

If you are on a time-of-use tariff, substantially. Overnight rates can be a third of afternoon peak rates. Circulation does not care what time of day it happens, though running during daylight helps chlorine distribution in a salt pool, so split the schedule if you can.

Does a bigger pump clean the pool better?

Generally no. Beyond what the filter and plumbing can handle, extra horsepower produces more heat and noise rather than more filtration, and it costs more every hour. Right-sizing the pump to the pool and plumbing matters far more than raw power.
