How the estimate is built

Material is priced per linear foot at a six-foot reference height, then scaled by an exponent of 0.85 rather than linearly — a taller fence needs more panel material but the same number of posts, and post hardware is a large share of the cost.

Posts are counted from your run length and spacing, then priced with concrete. Soil difficulty raises both the digging time and the concrete per post, because a hole in rocky ground is rarely the neat cylinder an auger would cut.

Labor uses the Bureau of Labor Statistics mean wage for construction laborers in your state times a contractor burden factor, at a production rate that varies by material — chain link runs at about 20 feet an hour, wrought iron at 9.

What decides whether a quote holds

What is underground. Rock, roots, old concrete footings, and buried utilities are invisible when the quote is written and are the usual reason a fence job runs over. Ask what happens if the crew hits rock before you sign.

Where the line is. A fence built on the wrong side of a boundary is an expensive thing to correct, and neighbours notice. A survey is cheap by comparison.

Where the numbers come from

Location is optional, and we only ask for a ZIP code or a state — never a street address. A ZIP code is matched to its state using published postal prefix ranges, and that state is used to look up labor and price rows in the tables below. If you leave it blank, or your ZIP cannot be matched, the estimate falls back to a national average and says so on the result.

Nothing you enter is transmitted or stored. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, and the only place your inputs appear is in the page URL, so you can bookmark or share a result if you choose to.

As with the interior material baselines, no public agency publishes exterior material prices at this granularity and proprietary construction cost databases cannot be reproduced. Every figure is material only, delivered to a metropolitan supply yard, before regional adjustment and before sales tax. For each one we record the range of values found across references, what we selected, and why — because an estimate you cannot interrogate is not much better than a guess.     Sampled panel-and-post material pricing at a 6 ft reference height spans roughly $6/ft for economy chain link to $90/ft for ornamental steel. Selected values are mid-band per material. The fourfold spread across materials dwarfs regional variation, which is why material choice is the headline input.

    United States. Cedar pricing is materially lower in the Pacific Northwest and higher in the Southeast; not modelled.
    Known limits
    Lumber pricing is the most volatile line in this dataset — it moved more than 100% within single years in the recent past. Annual review may not be frequent enough for the wood options.

    Why this value
    Heavy clay slows augering and holds water; rock can stop an auger entirely. Applied to both digging time and concrete volume, because a hole broken out of rock is larger and less regular than one augered in loam.

    Known limits
    The single most common cause of a fence job running over, and it is a self-assessed dropdown. A soil dataset keyed to location would be a genuine improvement.

    A basic chain-link walk gate is under $100; a wide ornamental double drive gate with heavy posts and drop rods exceeds $1,800. Selected values are mid-band for walk and double gates in typical residential materials. A drive gate can cost as much as twenty feet of fence, which is why gates are counted rather than assumed.

    Known limits
    Gate cost should scale with the fence material chosen and currently does not — a cedar privacy gate and a chain-link gate are priced identically. This is the clearest improvement available to this calculator.

    United States. Frost-line depth is regional and materially changes concrete volume — Minnesota posts need roughly twice the depth of Georgia posts.

    A survey, sometimes required and typically several hundred dollars, is not modelled. Small share of total cost, so error here barely moves the headline.

Cost factors

What changes the price most

Material
A fourfold spread from chain link to wrought iron, before any labour difference.
Gates
A drive gate can cost as much as twenty feet of fence, and needs heavier posts either side.
Soil and terrain
Rocky ground and slopes can add 40% to labour and are invisible until digging starts.
Height
More material, deeper posts for wind load, and a permit requirement in most places above six or seven feet.
Post spacing
Closer spacing raises cost but resists wind and sag. Six feet is worth considering in exposed sites.
Finish
Wood needs staining every few years. Vinyl, composite, and aluminium do not, which is where they earn back their premium.

How much does a fence cost per linear foot?

Installed, chain link commonly runs $15 to $30 per foot, wood privacy $25 to $50, vinyl $40 to $70, and aluminium or wrought iron $50 to $110. Height, terrain, soil, and gate count move all of these substantially.

How much does it cost to fence a quarter-acre yard?

A quarter acre is roughly 10,900 square feet; fencing the back portion typically needs 150 to 250 linear feet. At mid-range wood privacy pricing that lands in the mid four figures to low five figures installed, depending on gates and ground conditions.

Is vinyl fencing cheaper than wood?

Not up front — vinyl typically costs 50% to 70% more installed. It closes the gap over time because it never needs staining, and it lasts around 30 years against 15 for pine. The cost-per-year figure above makes that comparison directly.

Do I need a permit to build a fence?

Often, particularly above six feet, on a corner lot, or where a fence affects sight lines. Many HOAs also restrict material, height, and which side the finished face points. Check both before ordering, because material is rarely returnable once cut.

How deep should fence posts go?

A common rule is a third of the post length, or below the local frost line, whichever is deeper. In cold climates the frost line governs — a post set above it will heave and pull the fence out of line within a couple of winters.
