How this calculator works

Where the price comes from

The Energy Information Administration publishes a retail gasoline price every Monday. It covers the nation, each Petroleum Administration for Defense District sub-region, and nine individual states: California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Washington.

If you choose one of those nine, you get a state figure. Everywhere else gets its regional figure, which is the finest geography EIA publishes. The result says which of the two applied, because a Gulf Coast average covers six states and is a rough proxy for any one of them.

Why the answer is a range

A vehicle’s combined rating is measured on a standardised test cycle. Real driving departs from it constantly, and the departures are mostly in one direction. Sustained highway speeds, cold starts, short trips, roof boxes, underinflated tyres, and a heavy right foot all cost fuel.

The low end of the range assumes conditions favour you: warm weather, steady speeds, light load. The high end assumes they do not. If you have tracked your own economy over several tanks, entering it directly is far better than any class average.

Where the numbers come from

Location is optional, and we only ask for a ZIP code or a state — never a street address. A ZIP code is matched to its state using published postal prefix ranges, and that state is used to look up labor and price rows in the tables below. If you leave it blank, or your ZIP cannot be matched, the estimate falls back to a national average and says so on the result.

Nothing you enter is transmitted or stored. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, and the only place your inputs appear is in the page URL, so you can bookmark or share a result if you choose to.

    Two numbers here come straight from the EPA: the model year 2024 fleet-wide real-world average of 27.2 MPG and the truck SUV average of 25.7 MPG. The other class averages are editorial estimates positioned around those published anchors, and every one of them describes a NEW vehicle — the average vehicle actually on the road is roughly twelve years old and less efficient, which is why each class carries a range rather than a point. Depreciation, maintenance, tires, and registration are assumptions: no federal agency publishes them per vehicle, and the commercial datasets that do are licensed products we have not bought. Each is registered in the assumption registry with its observed range and rationale, and each is adjustable in every calculator that uses it.

These are the figures we chose rather than measured. For each one we record the range of values found across references, what we selected, and why — because an estimate you cannot interrogate is not much better than a guess. The 1 marked high risk are the ones most likely to be wrong and most consequential when they are.

    Why this value
    Three age bands rather than one figure, because upkeep roughly triples per mile between a nearly-new vehicle and one past ten years old. The typical value shown here is the mid-life band, which covers vehicles four to nine years old. Excludes collision damage and excludes fuel.

    These are multi-year averages, not predictions for any particular month. Real maintenance spending is lumpy: nothing for months, then a component failure. The high end of the older-vehicle band is where those years land.

Cost factors

What changes the price most

Distance
Directly proportional. Doubling the drive doubles the fuel.
Fuel economy
The other half of the equation. A pickup at 21 MPG uses half again the fuel of a sedan at 31 for the same trip.
Local price
Varies by nearly two dollars a gallon between the cheapest and most expensive states, mostly because of state fuel taxes and refinery access.
Speed
Not modeled directly, but significant. Most vehicles lose about 15% of their economy going from 65 to 75 mph, because drag rises with the square of speed.
Fuel grade
Premium runs 60 to 90 cents above regular. Only worth it if the manual requires rather than recommends it.
Load and terrain
Not modeled. A loaded roof rack can cost 10% to 25% at highway speed, and mountain driving costs more than the map distance suggests.

How much gas will I use on a 300 mile trip?

A midsize sedan at about 31 MPG uses roughly 10 gallons, costing about $41 at the current national average. A pickup at 21 MPG uses around 14 gallons for the same trip. Enter your own distance and vehicle above for a figure that reflects your state’s price.

How do I calculate gas cost for a trip?

Divide the distance by your vehicle’s miles per gallon to get gallons, then multiply by the price per gallon. The arithmetic is simple; getting a realistic MPG figure and a current local price is the part that actually determines whether the answer is any good.

Is premium gas worth the extra cost?

Only if your owner’s manual requires it. Where premium is merely recommended, engines run safely on regular by retarding ignition timing, at a small cost in power and economy that almost never repays the 60 to 90 cent price gap. Where it is required, using regular can cause knock and long-term damage.

Why is gas so much more expensive in California?

Three reasons stack up: the highest state fuel taxes in the country, a mandatory cleaner-burning fuel blend that only a handful of refineries produce, and an isolated fuel market with limited pipeline connection to the rest of the country. Together they typically put California well over a dollar above the national average.

Does driving slower really save gas?

Yes, and more than most people expect. Aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed, so it dominates above roughly 50 mph. Dropping from 75 to 65 mph typically recovers 10% to 15% of your fuel — on a 600 mile drive that is often more than an hour’s wages.
